The short version
- Sober Time helps you track your sobriety. It is not medical care or a crisis service.
- You can use it without an account, and what you write in it belongs to you.
- Premium is a subscription that renews automatically and is billed by Apple or Google. Cancel any time in your store account.
- The free version shows ads and partner offers, and we earn a commission when people sign up for BetterHelp through the app.
This summary is for convenience. The full terms below are what apply.
Agreeing to these terms
Sober Time is made by Sociosoftware LLC (“we”, “us”). By downloading or using the app or this website, you agree to these terms. If you don’t agree, please don’t use Sober Time.
You must be at least 13 years old to use Sober Time. If you are under the age of majority where you live, you need permission from a parent or guardian.
Not medical advice
Sober Time is a tool for tracking and supporting your sobriety. The health timeline, milestones, journal prompts, quotes and other content are general information to encourage you. They are not medical advice, diagnosis or treatment, and they are not tailored to your health, even when you personalize the timeline.
Stopping some substances suddenly can be dangerous. Withdrawal from alcohol, benzodiazepines or opioids can cause serious harm, including seizures. Talk to a doctor before you stop or change any substance or medication. After a period without opioids, your tolerance drops and the risk of overdose rises.
Sober Time is not an emergency or crisis service. If you or someone else is in danger, call your local emergency number. In the US you can call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, at any time.
Don’t rely on the app instead of professional care, and don’t delay getting help because of something you read in it.
Your data and accounts
You don’t need an account to use Sober Time. Our Privacy Policy explains what information we and our service providers collect and how it is used.
Cloud Sync
Cloud Sync lets you back up your data and restore it on another device. It needs an account, which you can create with Apple, Google or an email address. Creating backups requires Premium, but you can restore existing backups even if your subscription has ended. You can delete your Cloud Sync account, and the backups stored with it, from the app.
Keeping your data safe
- You are responsible for your device, your account login details and your app passcode. The passcode adds privacy on a shared device, but it doesn’t replace securing the device itself.
- If you delete the app or lose your device without a backup, your data can’t be recovered. We recommend using Cloud Sync.
- We advise against using Sober Time on a jailbroken or rooted device, which weakens your device’s security and may stop the app working properly.
Your content
Your journal entries, notes and other content belong to you. You allow us to store and process them only as needed to run the features you use, such as Cloud Sync, or to help you when you contact us for support.
Ads and partner offers
The free version of Sober Time is supported by ads, including banners and ads that fill the screen. Where the law requires it, the app asks for your consent before ads are personalized, and you can change your choice in the app’s Data privacy settings. Premium removes ads.
The app also shows offers for BetterHelp, an online therapy service. We are a BetterHelp affiliate partner and earn a commission when you sign up through Sober Time. BetterHelp’s services are provided by BetterHelp under its own terms, and we aren’t responsible for them. You can turn these offers off in Settings.
The Talking Sober community
The app’s Community tab opens the Talking Sober forum at talkingsober.com. You can read it without an account. Creating an account, posting and other activity on the forum are covered by the forum’s own guidelines and terms, which you agree to when you join it.
- Be kind and respectful. Don’t harass, threaten, impersonate or share anyone’s personal information.
- Don’t post illegal content, spam or advertising, or encourage anyone to use substances or hurt themselves.
- Community members aren’t medical professionals. Treat advice from other members as personal experience, not professional guidance.
- Moderators may remove content or accounts that break the forum’s rules.
Community perks
Premium subscribers can receive perks on one Talking Sober account. Perks end when the subscription ends.
Using the app fairly
We grant you a personal, nontransferable, nonexclusive license to use Sober Time on devices you own or control, for your own noncommercial use. You agree not to:
- copy, modify, resell or redistribute the app or its content, including the health timeline data, quotes, images and journal prompts;
- reverse engineer the app or try to extract its source code, except where the law allows it;
- interfere with the app, our services or other users, get around security or access limits, or try to get Premium features without paying for them;
- access our services by automated means, or in any way other than through the app and this website;
- use the app for anything unlawful.
The app, its design and content, and the Sober Time name and logo belong to Sociosoftware LLC and are protected by intellectual property laws.
Other services
Downloads and purchases go through the Apple App Store or Google Play, and their terms also apply. We use other service providers to run parts of the app, such as Cloud Sync and ads. Our Privacy Policy describes them and the information they handle.
Links to other websites are provided for convenience. We don’t control those sites and aren’t responsible for their content or practices.
Changes to the app
We may add, change or remove features, including which features are part of Premium. Some features need an internet connection, and your mobile provider’s data charges apply. To keep using the app you may need to install updates or a newer version of iOS or Android.
We may stop offering the app at any time. If we stop offering a paid feature you have an active subscription for, we will let you know in the app or on this website.
Disclaimers and liability
To the extent the law allows, Sober Time is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy or uninterrupted availability. We work to keep the app reliable and its information accurate, but we can’t guarantee it will always be available, free of errors or that your data will never be lost.
To the extent the law allows, Sociosoftware LLC is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, or for loss of data, arising from your use of Sober Time or your reliance on its content. Our total liability for any claim relating to Sober Time is limited to the amount you paid us for it in the 12 months before the claim.
Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under consumer protection laws that can’t be excluded by agreement.
Ending these terms
You can stop using Sober Time at any time by deleting the app. If you have a Cloud Sync account, delete it from the app first, or contact us and we will delete it for you. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription: cancel it in your store account.
We may suspend or end your access to our online services, such as Cloud Sync or community perks, if you seriously or repeatedly break these terms. When these terms end, your license to use the app ends, but sections 2, 7, 10, 12 and 13 continue to apply.
App Store users
If you downloaded Sober Time from the Apple App Store, these terms are between you and Sociosoftware LLC, not Apple. Apple’s Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies, and where it conflicts with these terms on the use of the app, Apple’s agreement prevails. Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for the app and is not responsible for any claims relating to it. Apple and its subsidiaries are third party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you.
General
These terms and our Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and us about Sober Time. If any part of these terms can’t be enforced, the rest still applies. If we don’t enforce a part of these terms right away, we can still enforce it later. We may transfer our rights under these terms to a company that takes over Sober Time. You may not transfer yours.
If we provide these terms in another language, the English version applies where they differ.
Updates to these terms
We may update these terms as Sober Time changes. We will post the new version on this page and change the date at the top. If a change is significant, we will take reasonable steps to let you know, such as a notice in the app. If you keep using Sober Time after an update, you accept the new terms.
